Artist's Comments

Well, there was an interesting contest on the VHR forums in which entrants had to create their own horse breed. So this is my creation. I kind of like the way it turned out, so it might go through a few variations before I decide on an absolute final design. Next will be thinking up all the specifics about them lol the design was the easy part.

FULL VIEW PLEASE! :D

Description for Contest:

The Capryx
Equus Capryx

Basic Characteristics: This elusive breed, resembling an Andalusian in build, is a true survivor, existing in nearly every habitat on Earth. Because they are so wide-spread, determining an exact location of origination is next to impossible. While each particular variety differs according to climate and terrain, there are some characteristics shared across the variations. All Capryx have cloven hooves and light feathering along the legs. They have two dark stripes on either side, just over the withers that are darker than the body colour, and all have what could be described as Pangare colouring, although the feathering is always darker than the legs. Between their twin horns (which give the Capryx its name, as they resemble those of a goat), there is a sheild-like marking that is lighter than the body, and almost always the same shade as the legs. Capryx eyes are always a shade of grey; the darker the body colour, the lighter the eyes. The final feature shared across all Capryx is the unique tail. Unlike that of a normal horse, the Capryx tail sprouts long hair only from the underside.

Average Height: Mares tend to stand around 14hh, while stallions are slightly taller, measuring an average 15.1hh.

Diet: Mountainous and forest-dwelling Capryx are believed to have similar diets to normal horses. Other variations are less common, and for the arctic and underground species, it is uncertain how they survive in such harsh, desolate terrains.

Life Span and Breeding: Because Capryx have never been captured and studied, their lifespan is a mystery. From sightings, however, it is believed that they have an abnormally long life of 100 years or more. Because of this, it is believed that mares and stallions must reach 9-10 years of age before becoming fertile. Capryx mate for life, and a breeding pair may only have three or four offspring in their lifetime. Foals are born with their adult colouring, however, for obvious reasons, their horns do not begin to grow until a year after birth.
